The Esplanade in Singapore

If there was an amazing venue to be had, this would be it.  The Esplanade - Theatre on the Bay sits on the Singapore waterfront in Marina Bay, with an amazing skyline and views out to sea.

The Esplanade holds two venues in one - a superb 1,600 concert hall with state of the art acoustics by world-renowned acoustician, the late Russell Johnson of Artec Consultants Inc, USA, and theatre with a capacity of 2,000 designed in an intimate horseshoe shape.  The Esplanade is also a destination, with shops, restaurants, rehearsal space, black box and venues to rent for functions and the like.

I have attended concerts and shows here.  Each time I visit, I am easily amazed by the sheer size and build of the venues.  In particular, the concert hall takes my breath away.  The sound in the concert hall is crystal clear, a testament to the quality and skill of the architect in building this hall.

My favourite performance that I have watched here is the T’ang Quartet (, The T’ang Quartet, Singapore homegrown talent that essentially grew up together playing their instruments, is funky, hip and wonderfully quirky.  I had the fortune to meet Leslie, the cellist, some years ago, an attractive man, thin and wiry with a dry sense of humour.

Singapore, though not renowned for its own homegrown talent, has the reputation of building state of the art, first class venues, and the Esplanade does not disappoint.  East meets West is at its best here in this garden city where English is its first language yet blends in a classy shot of local culture.  I am sure you don’t need any urging from me, but it is worth a visit, if nothing else, to sit in that classy concert hall at the Esplanade.
